The purpose of this study is to examine families' co-construction of their youth sports experiences. Specifically, this study examines the socialization processes families encounter and use in initial and enduring youth sports involvement. A second purpose of this study is to highlight the ways in which families co-construct a sporting family identity. This study uses both ethnography and conversation analysis to examine family communicative interactions. The following research questions guided this study: (1) In what ways do interactions about and within youth sports socialize parents and children into youth sporting culture? (2) In what ways do familial roles and rules shape and get shaped by family participation in organized youth sports? (3) In what ways do families construct a "sporting family identity" through communicative interactions related to youth sports?

Approximately 300 families with children between the ages of 4 and 15 who were involved in formally organized sports of basketball, soccer, baseball and softball were observed. A total of 100 hours of observations were completed at sporting events. Ten families were interviewed and three families provided recorded conversations of sports talk.

Findings suggest that sports socialization occurs through ongoing communication between family members and with other families at sporting events. In particular, families construct three different levels of involvement related to organized youth sports: sports as fun, sports as moderate competition, and sports as highly competitive. These involvement levels shape family perceptions of and engagement in particular youth sports programs. Findings also indicate that parents are the primary agents for socializing young children under the age of 15 into sports. Parents socialize children through taking on various roles, which serve to motivate, inspire, support and encourage children's sports participation. Analysis of family talk related to youth sports focused on parental assessments, pursuit of preferred responses, collaborative telling of sports events, and use of the word "we" to construct sporting experiences as shared.
