Alexander Pierre Francois Boely (1785-1858) was a pianist, organist, composer, teacher, and staunch conservative advocating composition by indigenous French composers during the formative years of the development of musical culture in Paris, France. Lesser known than his foreign contemporaries (Cramer, Czerny, Moscheles, Clementi, Chopin, and Liszt), he contributed significantly to the rich cultural music heritage of the era and to the piano literature generated during the first half of the nineteenth century.

The focus of the study is a stylistic and theoretical analysis of Boely's one hundred piano etudes composed in three volumes, Opp. 2, 6, and 13. Historical background is provided, including an analysis of each etude, and a discussion of their stylistic features and specific technical and musical idioms employed by the composer.
