Brass music during the American Revolutionary Era.
Brown, Philip.
Brass music during the American Revolutionary Era.
- 94 p.
Adviser: Don Immel.
Thesis (D.M.A.)--University of Washington, 2007.
The type of music most commonly associated with the American Revolution is that of fife and drums. This is not an entirely unfair characterization, as fife and drum music was pervasive in late 18th century America; however, a surprisingly rich and varied musical scene also existed during the time period. Churches, particularly those of the Moravians, provided music for congregations and communities. Royal governors, amateur musicians, and the militaries of both the American and British sides of the war used music for specific important purposes. Concert producers in urban areas offered public and private performances of music to subscribers. Moreover, in all of these musical settings, brass music had a distinct and significant role.

This dissertation presents the musical culture involving brass music that had developed in Colonial America by the time the War of Independence began. Chapters are devoted to each area of performance available to brass musicians, as well as the types of instruments and music that would have been used. This dissertation profiles the types of people who played brass instruments, placed within the context of evolving early American society. This work also describes the effects of the American Revolution on brass music, and the changes that developed after the war's conclusion. Ultimately, it is the intention of this dissertation to bring to light an important category of music that has been historically overshadowed, i.e. brass music during the American Revolutionary Era.
