Kassia the Nun: A case study in the poetic expression of iconophile and feminist thought in ninth-century Byzantium.
- 142 p.
Adviser: Kristine Utterback.
Thesis (M.A.)--University of Wyoming, 2007.
The present work examines the ninth-century Byzantine hymnographer, Kassia the Nun, the only female hymnographer whose works appear in the liturgical works of the Orthodox Church. Kassia's poems provide an example of Middle Byzantine religious thought on two issues: Iconoclasm and women. Each part provides a context for the interpretation of Kassia's works. In the first part on Iconoclasm, the author argues that Kassia's reflection on monasticism and the Incarnation in her poetry indicates her Iconophile positions. The second part includes two chapters identifying Byzantine paradigms and practice regarding women, followed by Kassia's thought on the subject of women.Subjects--Topical Terms:
