This redundant system's seismic behavior affects the details of the retrofit process, and it was hoped that demonstration of sufficient ductility would limit modification to the existing system. The load protocol for this test is based on the Port of Los Angeles' strain based limit states, Operational Level Earthquake (OLE) and Contingency Level Earthquake (CLE).

With a lateral system already present, these steel piles were only required to maintain their gravity load capacity after a seismic event.
