Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Illinois at Chicago, 2007.
Owing to the intense and unmitigated human development over the last century, ensuring the sustainability of the earth's ecosystem and availability of its primary services has become paramount for the existence of our future generations. This doctoral dissertation is an investigation in the field of sustainable management, broadly defined as the synergetic existence of the natural and human components of our ecosystem, and explores diverse systems and their management to ensure overall ecosystem sustainability.

Sustainability of water systems is critical for the overall sustainability. Hence, the presented research work looks at different water systems such as infrastructure and natural water bodies subjected to natural disasters as well as anthropogenic pollution, and proposes efficient management strategies. The definition of sustainability and possible management options differ for each system. For domestic water distribution network infrastructures, security against contamination using optimal sensor placements is the idea of sustainability. For natural aquatic systems like lakes and rivers sustainable recovery of these systems from natural disasters using time dependent decision making is studied. Moreover, to understand the effects of anthropogenic actions, the case of mercury pollution in water is analyzed, and various innovative schemes like process design and selection, pollutant trading and lake liming are discussed.

Since these systems are small units of a large constellation of such systems that ultimately constitute the earth's ecosystem, it is essential to perform an integrated analysis. This work achieves this goal by analyzing two such integrated food web models, each with varying degree of emphasis on the economic and social dimensions. For a simple food web model with focus on ecology, selection of the right control parameter, followed by time dependent control derivation is performed. For an integrated ecological-economic model, scenario analysis that may guide policy making is performed.

At every stage, various systems theory techniques are used for decision making, and static and dynamic uncertainties, which are inherent to these systems, are incorporated at various stage of this work to make it robust. The results emphasize the success of different systems theory based techniques for sustainable ecosystem management.
