Jacquard tapestry weaving provides the opportunity for designing an enormous number of complex pictorial and other patterning effects using combinations of warp colors, filling colors and integrated weaves. In the traditional fabric design process the resultant visual perception of the pattern, using different colored yarns, can only be attained through the production of fabric sampling. This is a very time consuming and costly process. In Jacquard woven fabrics, the structural creation of shapes and images is relatively easy, but accurate control of color rendering of intimately blended pre-colored yarns is a critical and difficult-to-control attribute. Multiple trials are often required for successful color reproduction in order to match the original artwork.

Computer Simulation is highly desirable as an aid to designating particular structural colorations, but accurate color rendering is critical. The use of colorimetry has helped to achieve better reproducibility and accuracy in the shade matching of the textile products. However, no commercial system is available for accurate color imaging of Jacquard weave designs without first making the structural color effect in prototype form. In this research, therefore, a model is developed that combines color and geometry of woven structures for creating accurate digitized color imaging of the target design, thereby reducing or even eliminating the need for physical sampling prior to production. Based on the model, an algorithm is also developed to automate color allocation process by selecting weaves and yarns. The algorithm combined with databases of yarn colorimetric values and weaves would allow the production of woven designs that match the target. The immediate recognized advantage of this work is the ability to increase manufacturing efficiency by contributing an automated process to assist Jacquard fabric designers in the creation of pictorial fabrics that are a very close match to the original "artwork".
