The ability to transfer knowledge is a necessary attribute for attaining clinical best practice. Despite the existence of opportunities to improve clinical practice the ability to implement necessary change has been limited. Appreciating the flow of knowledge within a complex adaptive system provides a catalyst for new approaches to improvement. Change cannot be prescribed by administration and large system interventions will most likely not be successful. However, in preparing an organization for this unpredictable future one also creates the opportunity for success.

The Fraser Health Surgical Services team contributed to recommendations which point to the characteristics of an organizational context necessary to support knowledge transfer. The recommendations are focused on leadership capacity, structural support and relationships, data to drive knowledge flow, and communication building through engagement.
