In this paper, I will argue that the premise that China will act aggressively to secure needed oil supply is not supported by the direction of China's grand foreign strategy in general and China's oil security policy in particular. Even though China is still pursuing a realist approach to oil security, this approach is increasingly mixed with market-oriented polices and is essentially derived from Stephen M. Walt's defensive realism, which differs from offensive realism, and does not necessarily predict the inevitability of conflict between China and the United States. Although confrontation and conflict cannot be completely excluded, it is unlikely that oil security will be an independent causal variable.
