"Forms of Submission" is a study of biographic writing and interpretation required in exchange for assistance in the United States, thus defining the conditions in which personal need is valued in financial terms. Framing the study within the 20th century boom in bureaucratic technology and charitable innovation, I analyze the varied uses of the biographic profile in social work, journalism and legal aid, and the modes of analysis that select scholarship winners who have overcome adversity. By investigating the production of the formally fragmented biography as a genre of writing linked to life-maintenance and opportunity, I present an institutional theory of biographic currency : the point at which need attracts value through documented disclosure of personal details, mediated by professionals.

Biographic currency responds to the demand for selective assistance in a market economy and points the way to emerging welfare-markets as aid organizations adapted business methods to suit distributive aims. The study's conclusions explain the social function of this exchange and the particular role of biographic writing within aid-granting institutions. The chapters chart how philanthropic foundations developed a banking system for biographic currency, how public aid agencies communicated bankruptcy through the same, and why private scholarships currently use the language of investment to justify giving to historically and economically disadvantaged students.
