Seppuku, ritual suicide by disembowelment, is an act that is uniquely Japanese. Throughout history, seppuku was used by the warrior class as a means of meeting death honorably. Although seppuku existed long before the reign of the Tokugawa, warfare provided the warrior with a means of obtaining honor and proving loyalty to their daimyo, family, and nation. The Tokugawa brought an era of peace, which stranded the warrior in a land without war. No longer did seppuku carry the connotations it had in the past; it became more significant as an expression of honor and loyalty due to the absence of military conflict.

This study deals with the changing significance of seppuku during the Edo era, and its effects as a socio-political factor. I have examined the earliest roots of seppuku to examples from modern times. It is my conclusion that the most significant change in the philosophy of seppuku occurred during the peaceful reign of the Tokugawa.
