The mass protests against Prime Minister Kishi Nobusuke's effort to revise the US-Japan Security Treaty (Anpo) in 1960 were a watershed event in postwar Japanese history. It is common to situate these protests at the apex of a new style of mass activism starting in the mid 1950s exemplified in the anti-nuclear movement. It is also commonly pointed out that the persistence of war memories facilitated the massive expansion of these protests. This dissertation focuses on a related but distinct factor Zengakuren's (All Japan Federation of Student Governments) efforts to spark a Japanese revolution throughout the 1950s. In 1960, Zengakuren was led by the Bund (Communist League), a "New Left" organization that broke away from the Japanese Communist Party (JCP) in late 1958. Their influential narrative of the late 1950s accentuates the contrasts between their own "bright" 1960 protests and the "dark" early 1950s student movement led by the JCP. Such a distinction, however, is too clear-cut. The Bund's actions during the 1960 protests were marked by both "bright" cheerful iconoclasm and "dark" violent anger. This was the culmination of the Zengakuren's efforts to wage Cold War and foment revolution in 1950s Japan.
