Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Chicago, 2000.
The encounter of different cultures in French Vietnam exposed individuals to new forms of everyday life, shaking up traditional practices and social categories. This dissertation explores how Vietnamese, French, and Chinese people used old and new everyday practices to negotiate colonial power disparities in the early years of French domination in Vietnam. The details of their daily lives supplied colonizers and colonized with a vocabulary for talking about changing social relations in seemingly uncharged terms.

Archival research in Aix-en-Provence and Hanoi revealed material that had been overlooked as nonpolitical, such as tax inspections, raids on gambling houses, and fundraising appeals. These sources are rich with political meaning when read against newspapers and books published at the time and they allow a new story to be told. Moving beyond the modernizing claims of Vietnamese colonial intellectuals, we can see that everyday experiences also taught villagers, workers, and elites a wide variety of ways to influence a modern state or to maneuver around its demands.

By comparing areas as diverse as alcohol, cuisine, gambling, and charitable projects, this dissertation argues that areas tightly controlled by the colonial state galvanized everyday resistance, whereas areas more determined by market forces or informal social relations allowed a more flexible arena of cultural exchanges and accommodations.
