A study on the duration of load and creep behavior as well as the stresses distributed around the veneer-joints of Yellow-Poplar (YP) laminated veneer lumber (LVL) is presented. The effect of environmental conditions as well as veneer-joint designs on the short-term and long-term mechanical properties of YP LVL is investigated for modeling their structural behavior. The stress distribution in the LVL beams subjected to edgewise static bending is investigated by using bonded strain gages and finite element analysis. Nondestructive testing was also performed to evaluate YP LVL's dynamic stiffness. The stress distributions around the veneer-joint were examined by using finite element methods (FEM). FEM solution of a 2-dimensional veneer-joint model was compared with a closed-form solution. Furthermore, beam stress analysis on YP LVL by the FEM solution of a three-dimensional model was compared with a Fourier Series solution and the verification of stresses was made from strain gage measurements. DOL models for YP LVL with different veneer-joints, based on the damage accumulation and strain energy approaches, were developed for members with different types of veneer-joint exposed to different environmental conditions.
