Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Long Beach, 2008.
The purpose of this study is to detail the immediate relationship between dynasts and their Buddhist advisors, which Buddhism reigns as the national religion of prominent influence during this era. Its pious adherents actively pursuing their objective of realization in profusion and veneration at all levels of society; its holy grounds sojourned by elitists and noblemen as prevalent as commoners. An important aspect of Vietnamese history that needs clarification is the placement of Buddhism in its social and political settings. The objective of this paper is to dissect some of the fundamental understanding based on extant sources that may substantiate verifiable portions of Vietnamese Buddhist history. By examining the relationship of Buddhist monks and the dynasts, this study conveys a veracious existence of Buddhist importance in Vietnamese history. This thesis focuses on the relative affinity of the religious sect to the imperial throne. By examining how Buddhist monks contributed to the court as guidance and counselor to the king, this study shows that their influences and religious leadership in the royal court helps fashioned the spiritual ritual and ceremonial arrangement of the throne.
