Thesis (M.Ed.)--University of Alaska Anchorage, 2007.
Past studies have shown that students with disabilities have difficulties transitioning from the school environment to post-secondary activities such as work or higher education. Self-determination skills have been shown to help students with this transition. This study examined the perception of high school students with learning disabilities towards self-determination skill instruction in Career and Technology courses, using a qualitative research design. Individualized instruction, choice in the classroom, participation in Career and Technology clubs, the occasional use of rewards as motivators, better use of Transition Plans, and hands on experience in the Career and Technology courses were all identified as helpful in promoting self determination skills. Implications for further research are discussed.
