Cranberries are a rich source of antioxidants that may potentially prevent chronic diseases of aging including osteoporosis. A four-month study was conducted with thirty-two male rats that drank either 27% or 45% cranberry juice concentrate. Analysis of plasma antioxidant capacity, RBC oxidative resistance, and IGF-1 concentration was conducted. The right femur and the fourth lumbar underwent strength testing and bone quality and mineral concentration analysis. ORX significantly (P<0.05) reduced antioxidant capacity, IGF-1 concentration, femur density, cortical area, strength, and time induced fracture rate in comparison to SHAM. Analysis of fourth lumbar confirmed significant (P<0.05) decreases in BMA, BMC, BV/TV%, connectivity density and a significant increase in trabecular separation in ORX groups. Although rats that drank CJ had a significant (P<0.05) increase in the plasma antioxidant capacity and RBC oxidative resistance to hemolysis in comparison to the ORX group, they did not experience a significant effect on bone quality.
