Buffelgrass (Pinnisetum ciliare) is an exotic grass that was imported to south Texas for its forage value in the 1940's. Since then, it has been planted to or has invaded approximately 4 million ha of south Texas as well as millions more in southwestern United States, northern Mexico, and Australia. Buffelgrass is capable of displacing native plants species and provides inferior habitat for northern bobwhite quail and other grassland birds. In this thesis, I examined how northern bobwhite quail ( Colinus virginianus) utilized areas dominated by buffelgrass and bobwhite nesting characteristics in buffelgrass. I also attempted to restore native vegetation in these landscapes using the herbicide imazapyr. I found that bobwhite quail readily nest and roost in buffelgrass and that they are capable of utilizing buffelgrass to fulfill at least some of their requirements. Additionally, I successfully established one native grass, shortspike windmillgrass (Chloris subdolichostachya), into buffelgrass-dominated areas.
