This action research project examines possible causes of first-time and subsequent hamstring strains in football student-athletes within the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference during the 2006 football season. Seventeen student-athletes in the Conference were surveyed. Analysis of the data consisted of frequencies and percentages for both first-time and subsequent hamstring strain participants. The findings of this study reveal eccentric exercise, fitness level, position, age, flexibility, joint dysfunction, weather, playing surface, time, effort, ethnicity, and height have a considerable effect on first-time hamstring strains. Previous injury, eccentric exercise, fatigue, position, joint dysfunction, weather, playing surface, and effort have a considerable effect on subsequent hamstring strains. Results of this study will provide relevant information for medical personnel interested in hamstring strains.Subjects--Topical Terms:
