The frequency of depression in the sample was 27.5 % indicating that depression is a serious concern in this population. Descriptive and multivariate analyses indicated that coping strategies were related to depressive symptomology. The depressed group used more emotion oriented coping strategies than the nondepressed group. The nondepressed group used more problem solving strategies and fewer emotion oriented strategies. Although the statistical significance between the two groups was limited with regard to perceived coping effectiveness, the depressed group consistently ranked themselves as less effective in dealing with depressive symptoms. Coping effectiveness did moderate the relationship between depression and functioning for men but not for women or for the group overall. Thus men who rated themselves more effective also had less depression after controlling for functional ability.

Analysis of the qualitative interviews showed that the respondents for the most part did not seek treatment for a variety of reasons including denial and minimization of symptoms, dissatisfaction with providers, ageism, faith, attributional style, privacy and personal efficacy. The majority of the sample had never attempted to access professional mental health treatment. The findings of this study have implications for social work policy, practice, education and research. Among these implications is the need to develop more appropriate mental health policies that provide reimbursement for mental health service delivery in the home and other innovative delivery systems.
