Thesis (M.A.)--Dalhousie University (Canada), 2007.
In his Orations, Maximus of Tyre draws intriguing parallels between Sappho and Socrates. He employs Sappho's poetry in his explanation of the Socratic erotic art: he indicates a similarity between Socrates' conception of Eros as sophist and Sappho's idea of Eros as "myth-weaver," he likens Sappho to Diotima for her wisdom in love matters, and he suggests Sappho and Socrates both banished lamentation over death. These comparisons point to larger questions: how does Sappho's poetry help illuminate Socratic eroticism, and, how can Socrates' ideas deepen our understanding of Sappho's depiction of Eros? This thesis explores Sappho's poetry and Socrates' views of Eros as they are expressed in Plato's Phaedrus, Symposium, and Phaedo. It also offers a reading of the new Sappho poem, which provides a beautiful reflection on the mortal necessity of aging and death, and emphasizes the urgency of the human pursuits of love and learning.
