This study investigated through the use of narrative research the processes whereby people moved past personality fear patterns in order to pursue their callings. Callings are defined as each person's sacred mission that speaks to the reason for being, especially with regard to providing meaningful work in the world. It at least partially answers the question "Why am I here?" Three men and 5 women participated, with ages ranging from 40 to 68, with vocations covering Holland's 6 occupational categories, and of African-American, Asian, European-American, and Latino ethnicities. The fear patterns with which these 8 individuals wrestled included issues about self-esteem, locus of control, finances, and time. Other external obstacles were sexism, racism, and bureaucratic conservatism. Every participant listened to and followed inner wisdom, intuition, or somatic signals as they pursued their callings. Their successful manifestation of callings was due in part to parental support, family orientation, professional guidance, role models, and other support systems. Taking action to manifest callings involved character traits of internal power, commitment, empathy, altruism, sacrifice, perseverance, faith, gratitude, and confidence. Although not all the participants described themselves as courageous, this quality was found in each participant's narrative. They stand as models for others to develop the courage to manifest their callings. The expression of callings is unfolding through time, becoming stronger and more developed while the individuals who manifest their life tasks become more empowered and self-confident. The research is useful in refining definitions of callings. The exemplars had moved beyond individual preoccupations with affluence or social standing and instead became aware of a deeper meaning, encompassing service to others in the community at large. The insights about callings contributes to a better understanding of true works' influence on the evolution of consciousness, the nature of psychospiritual health and wholeness, integration with Self, and self-actualization.
