Relatively little is known about the variables leading to differences in subjective well-being, happiness and satisfaction with life. Demographic variables, such as age and gender, explain only a small percentage of the variability. Traits, while being stable predictors of subjective well-being, are lacking a theoretical framework to bind them. This study attempted to find the predictors of happiness and satisfaction with life using psychoanalytic concepts---the Eriksonian psychosocial developmental stages, and the maturity and flexibility in the usage of defense mechanisms. Thus, the study also aimed at linking the two disparate psychological academic traditions of psychoanalysis and subjective well-being. The study was conducted using the population of a private American college. It was discovered that the successful resolution of the first six Eriksonian developmental stages explained about half the variability in happiness and satisfaction with life. The first, fifth and sixth stages were most explanatory, which was explained by the primacy of basic trust, and the age-congruent importance of the identity forming and intimacy finding tasks. Using mature defense mechanisms, such as humor or sublimation, was associated with increase in happiness, while using immature defense mechanisms, such as acting out or distortion of reality, was associated with the lowering of happiness. Thus, being able to confront reality, rather than avoid or distort it, has proved beneficial to one's well-being. Flexibility in using a wide variety of defense mechanisms was both beneficial and a hindrance to well-being, depending on the general level of distress. In highly distressful times, being inflexible is useful, while at non-stressful times flexibility raised the sense of subjective well-being. Alternatively, using only a few defense mechanisms raises one's well-being, if those defense mechanisms function well, while using only a few defense mechanisms that do not function well causes distress. Following those findings, several new insights can be found into the nature of subjective well-being. It has been found that it is the mature person, that faces his problems, will have a better chance at happiness than the person who avoids them. Happiness and satisfaction with life appear to be not innate tendencies, or the result of external stimulus or circumstances, but rather an attribute that lies between the internal and external. Happiness appears to be constructed by external social situations, especially in early years, and continues to affect, construe and be construed, by the social world of the growing person. As thus, it is not internal or external, but rather developmental and interpersonal. It is the result of a lifelong development.
