520 $a This dissertation extends the exploration of the impact of national culture on management behavior. It examines the effect of national culture on management behavior in Malawi, Africa, focusing on management cultural diversity due to the outside influences on the local culture by foreign management theories and practices throughout the country's colonial history of governance, religion, and education.
520 $a Using survey instruments of Hofstede and Hofstede (2005) for national culture, and Cooke and Lafferty's (1989) Organizational Cultural Inventory (OCI) for management behavior, 130 managers of Malawian descent completed the two survey questionnaires. Analyses of data, using SPSS 13.0, showed positive relationships between national culture dimensions and management behavioral styles as follows: (a) Power distance with Humanistic-Encouraging, Affiliative, and Approval cultures; (b) Uncertainty avoidance with Self-Actualizing culture; (c) Collectivism with Achievement, Competitive, and Perfectionistic cultures; and (d) Long Term Orientation with Self-Actualizing, Humanistic-Encouraging, Affiliative, Power, and Competitive cultures. Further analyses of data showed the predictive power of influence (effect) of national culture dimensions on management behavioral styles as follows: (a) Power distance on Affiliative (p < .019) and Approval (p < .001) behaviors; (b) Uncertainty avoidance on Avoidance behavior ( p < .019); (c) Collectivism on Achievement (p < .004), and Competitive (p < .018); and Long Term Orientation on Affiliative (p < .046), Avoidance ( p < .035) and Power (p < .049) behaviors.
520 $a Results of this study provide additional insights into the taken-for-granted theory that national culture determines management behavior. The impact of national culture on management behavior of those of Malawian descent is partial. This dissertation provides conclusions about the specific national culture dimensions and how they relate to and impact management behavior in Malawi.
