Introduction. This work is about the critical problem of extinction facing smaller churches across America. Culture has dealt a painful blow to generational churches in rural and small communities. These faithful communities/churches experience grief and loss, not only of their faith base in the community, but of the fellowship they have shared. Churches facing decline are left not knowing how to process the crisis or how hope can be found through the struggle.

Method. In processing this work, the hospice model for palliative care and family systems theory were used to provide an understanding of the effects of grief in the church as a family unit. The applications of personal experiences of pastors, patient advocates, professional care givers, and this author's own disciplines are used. Statistical research was gathered regarding denominational data for declining membership and funds. Personal interviews were conducted with professionals in the health care industry as well as clergy. A biblical exploration has been made throughout.

Results. Resulting from the data, interviews, biblical exploration, and use of systems models, emerged a care plan for congregations, pastors, and orphans (those remaining from a church closure). As individuals process grief, so also do larger systems, namely the church. Proper treatment of the process results in healthy survivors (adoptees) who may integrate with new families of faith to carry on God's work.

Discussion. Implementing the hospice model of care provides a compassionate way of caring for the families of faith, who face the impending death of the familiar church structure. Hospice does not cure the condition but allows room for the grief to be processed. Family systems theory allows the work of self-examination and examination of the entire system to determine cause and effect of the demise. Exploration of biblical and church history empowers survivors to see how God has led them and continues to lead them into the future. Having a sense of hope and purpose are necessary for survivors to continue serving Christ.

Conclusion. Examining the journey of faith, in a particular setting, gives sight to those who feel helpless and abandoned as the church expires. This area is one that has, so far, not been approached with much enthusiasm. Denominations are just now realizing the need for education in these areas to both the existing congregations and pastors. This work is proposed to support the expediting of trained, organized, and disciplined teams to care for the churches in the final stages of their journey. Churches have a right to die with dignity, supported by the denomination, community, and caregivers who have been rightly instructed in the concept of care and bereavement.
