A growing body of literature suggests that some individuals demonstrate problematic Internet use (PIU) that is excessive, compulsive, and inappropriate. Such use is associated with marked distress and functional impairment. Evidence has emerged that PIU may be related to personality, depression, reduced sociability, and a variety of clinical symptoms. The current research describes three studies which investigated the structure of the PIU construct and provide evidence about associated personality dimensions. Specifically, it was hypothesized that PIU would be related to procrastination, impulsivity, rejection sensitivity, and loneliness. Furthermore, stress and coping were hypothesized mediators of the association between personality and PIU. In Study One, a multidimensional, theory-based measure of PIU was administered to a sample of undergraduate students (N = 211) and re-administered two-months later. The measure demonstrated evidence of reliability and validity, and confirmatory factor analysis indicated four dimensions of the PIU construct: Diminished Impulse Control, Social Comfort, Loneliness/Depression, and Distraction. In Study 2, the measure was also administered online to Internet users ( N = 404), along with a measure of social desirability. The PIU construct was once again confirmed, and it related negatively to social desirability. Finally, in Study 3, the measure was used to investigate personality correlates and related psychosocial contributors to PIU. Furthermore, the relative contribution of stress, coping, and depression were examined. Results indicated that coping and perceived stress partially mediated the relationship between PIU and procrastination, loneliness, and rejection sensitivity, and that they fully mediated the relationship between PIU and impulsivity. PIU predicted depression and this relationship was partially mediated by stress. The current findings represent a substantially improved understanding of the structure of the PIU construct, and a better understanding of associated personality features.
