The three-dimensional structure of linear and nonlinear waves generated by infinite length and the finite length three-dimensional wavemakers is developed theoretically. 520 $a A three-dimensional wavemaker can exist only in theory. To generate directional waves in a wave tank, we use a multi-element wavemaker; therefore, the multi-element wavemaker theory and the relation between three-dimensional wavemaker and multi-element wavemaker is presented. The effect due to the finite length of elements (paddles) was examined theoretically.
520 $a A wavemaker moving in simple-harmonic motion produces wave trains both at the frequency of the wavemaker and its harmonics. These waves consist of the Stokes waves as well as higher harmonic free waves due to the finite displacement of the paddles; a physical model was used at the Ocean Engineering Laboratory in the University of Delaware to detect the waves by the techniques of the wavenumber-frequency spectral analysis.
520 $a Because the phase lag between the second order Stokes waves and the second harmonic free waves is not random, the standard methods for estimating the wavenumber-frequency spectrum are not applicable (Jeffery, et al. 1981; Goda, 1981; Isobe and Kondo 1984); therefore, a modified MLM (Maximum Likelihood Method) was developed. The modified MLM can be used to resolve the wave spectrum of second order waves generated by a directional wavemaker as well as the wave spectrum in the incident and reflected wave field.
