Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Catholic University of America, 2008.
This dissertation develops and evaluates the performance of an advanced multiple access protocol for transmission of full complement of multimedia signals consisting of voice, video, data, text and images over wireless ATM (WATM) networks. The protocol is named advanced multiple access protocol for multimedia transmission (AMAPMT). The principle of operation of the protocol is presented in a number of logical flow charts. The protocol takes into account priorities assigned to the five types of signals, time-to-live (TTL), and channel state information (CSI). Performance of the protocol is evaluated in terms quality of service parameters cell loss ratio (CLR), mean cell transfer delay (MCTD) and throughput.

A simulation test bed for a WATM network consisting of a selectable number of stations, mobiles and a base station has been implemented using OPNET software package. In this test bed one can implement wireless multimedia communications with selectable distributions and mean values of transaction size, distributions and mean values of inter arrival time of transactions, time-to-live, buffer size and a weighted round robin queuing model with selectable weights. The performance of the AMAPMT protocol is evaluated by using this test bed. Results for CLR, MCTD and throughput are obtained and presented in tabular and graphical forms for various combinations of the above-mentioned parameters.

The above results for AMAPMT are compared with that of the best currently available multiple access protocol called adaptive request channel multiple access (ARCMA). AMAPMT protocol out performs ARCMA protocol. The results of this dissertation will be helpful in implementing and evaluating performance of multimedia access protocols over wireless ATM networks under many selectable conditions. This will help in the design of such networks and protocols. Ability to communicate with multimedia signals is becoming more and more important and is going to impact society in many ways. The advanced multiple access protocol for multimedia transmission (AMAPMT) will enhance the capability of WATM networks and make them more useful to fulfill the need of more users of multimedia in wireless ATM networks.
