Thesis (M.A.)--University of Massachusetts Lowell, 2007.
This thesis places NAFTA in the context of globalization, examines NAFTA's basic provisions, and focuses on outcomes for NAFTA-dislocated workers in Massachusetts. NAFTA-displaced workers in Massachusetts who received Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) between 2001 and 2004 benefited from a relatively efficient state-level program. Those employed from this group earned 85% of their former pay but primarily found employment in low-prestige occupations that offered little: opportunity for advancement or access to employer-subsidized health care. Further, displaced workers had mixed-reviews regarding TAA, complained about unfair (and illegal) treatment from management regarding their layoffs, and had difficulty adjusting to their new situations. These findings, while based on limited data, are consistent with more exhaustive research.Subjects--Topical Terms:
