Preserving The Negro Spiritual: An Examination of Contemporary Practices, a study designed to determine contemporary practices implemented to preserve the Negro spiritual, presents findings based upon research conducted within 16 states of the United States and the District of Columbia. Decline in prominence and performance popularity prompted the researcher to conduct the study. The group of forty participants involved in the study was composed of 11 music educators, 14 performing artists, 6 members of performing units, 11 members of religious organizations, 6 independent performing units, 3 college and university performing units, 5 preservation organizations, 8 individual preservationists, 7 historians, 5 authors, 8 libraries, 2 librarians, 8 choral conductors, 3 ministers, 3 consultants, 2 vocal coaches, 1 business owner, 2 educators, 1 actress, 1 federal archives library, 4 university based preservation organizations, and 2 composer-arrangers. Most of the participants were engaged in 2 or more of the categories listed. The forty participants engaged in interviews, completed a questionnaire, or provided observation opportunities. The majority of the participants provided archival documents to substantiate their claims of implementing contemporary practices to preserve the Negro spiritual. Data revealed 4 categories of individuals and organizations engaged in implementing preservation practices, 9 classifications of preservation practices, 12 distinct practices within the 9 classifications, 5 settings in which preservation practices are developed and implemented, 12 funding sources, 6 suggested funding sources, and plans at all levels to improve the preservation process. Implications and recommendations are also presented.
