Green, Debra D.
Africanity among African Mexicans: An afrocentric study of identity formation in a Mexican community.
- 372 p.
Adviser: Molefi Kete Asante.
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Temple University, 2007.
This dissertation examines the concept of Africanity in the context of the historical experiences of African Mexicans. Since the origin of the African Mexican population is thought to be African, this study explores how the concept of Africanity is articulated in the lived experiences of the African Mexicans. This study does not attempt to cover the entire African Mexican population in Mexico, but instead concentrates on the African Mexican population on the Pacific coast of Mexico in the Costa Chica region in the states of Guerrero and Oaxaca where the largest concentration of Africans in Mexico reside, particularly, in Huehuetan, Guerrero. Specifically, it focuses on the elements of African identity present in the culture.

After outlining the historical origin of the population and the importation of Africans to Mexico, this study discusses the development of the population in terms of resistance to enslavement, and includes subtle forms of resistance and flight and insurgence. This dissertation evaluates the process of Mexicanization of the African by examining how the concepts and processes of mestizaje (miscegenation), blanqueamiento (whitening), and the sistema de castas (caste system) contributed to the Mexican identity and Mexicanidad. Further, this study traces the concept of race from its European inception to the emergence of its modern conception in New Spain. Further it explores the European concepts of "Negro" and its derogatory notions of Africans and explores how these concepts and perceptions further contributed to the identity construction of the Afromexican.
