This research study explored significant themes and patterns that emerged from the art making and writing of clients in a substance abuse treatment facility. Ten outpatient clients at a local substance abuse treatment center in a small midwestern town participated in this study. Two art-making sessions, each lasting approximately 90 minutes, were conducted one week apart. An adapted form of naturalistic observation was employed, and data were collected from the artwork, written responses, verbalizations, and demographic surveys. Data were organized using a modified version of the Four Categories of Art Therapy Assessment (FCATA). The most significant outcomes from the analysis of data concerned the congruency of the artwork and the written and/or verbal explanations, the ability of the artwork to address issues of denial, and a pattern of concrete thinking and other deficits in cognitive functioning. Furthermore, the creation and processing of the artwork served as a catalyst to insight. Participants gained personal awareness and understanding from the art therapy experience, thus fueling the process of change. The results of the research study supported the utilization of art therapy as a valid, unique, and effective treatment for substance abuse and dependence disorders.
