Thesis (Ed.D.)--Stephen F. Austin State University, 2007.
The researcher, in this phenomenological study, examined various interpretations of creativity, focusing more intently on artistic creativity through social inquiry. Specifically, the purpose of this dissertation was to inquire into the nature of artistic creativity through the lived experiences of artist practitioners. The researcher, as phenomenologist, identified eight artists who were recognized for their respective artistic work, and who could, through an examination of the artist practitioner's life world and the art he or she created, provide insight into their personal experiences with artistic creativity. Through hermeneutic phenomenological research design strategies, qualitative interpretive and critical rationalism of the social reality and social construction of the artist-practitioners, phenomenological research interviews took place. This study sought to examine and synthesize common patterns, similarities, and idiosyncratic characteristics of artist-practitioners' lifeworlds and artistic creativity. Five themes emerged in the examination of the lifeworlds of the artist-practitioners: artistic childhood, education, supportive influence, nature of persistence, and location or place. A synthesis of the phenomena of artistic creativity, based on data, resulted in five points of meaning in relation to post-modem culture: metaphor, intrinsic motivation, change, mastery of art, and voice.
