Preference of different metrical units used to perceive, code, and perform equitone sequences set in different meters was investigated with varying age groups. A sample of seventy-nine subjects consisted of three different levels of age groups. Sample age-groups included eight-year-olds, ten-year-olds, and fifteen through eighteen-year-olds. Equitone sequences were paired with different lengths of metrical units/clocks. The 2:1 ratio sequence (simple duple) was paired with clocks of one (SD1), two (SD2), and four (SD4) units in length. The 3:1 ratio sequence was presented at two different tempos (compound duple and simple triple) and was paired with clocks of one (CD1/ST1) and three (CD3/ST3) units in length.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Subjects listened to each of the pairings and reproduced the sequence. Between group intervals of the subject-generated responses were measured in MIDI-units. A repeated measures design preserving a familywise $\alpha$ at.05 (two-tailed) was used with one between factor comprising of three levels (age) and one within factor comprising of seven levels (clock). The dependent variable was the total MIDI-unit gap deviation score and the independent variable was age. The Holm procedure was used to test the main effect of clock and meter type through seven planned comparisons. The Fisher LSD tested the factor of age, nesting age in clock.

The null hypothesis dealing with clock unit were not rejected. It was concluded that clock unit length did not influence performance accuracy. Meter type was found to be significant and the null hypothesis was rejected. The equitone sequence set in compound duple was performed more accurately than the same sequence set in simple triple meter. Age was found to be a significant factor in the performance accuracy of equitone sequences and the null hypothesis was rejected. The performance accuracy of the fifteen through eighteen-year-old age group was significantly different than the ten-year-old age group and the eight-year-old age group in all simple duple sequences and one simple triple sequence (ST1). The compound duple sequences did not yield a significant difference due to age.
