Each lesson was structured around a piece of classical music. Composers represented were Haydn, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Dvorak, J. S. Bach, and Vaughan Williams. Popular songs recorded by big bands more than fifty years ago were also played.

It was concluded that the lessons were of value socially, affectively, and cognitively. The degree to which each of the three spheres was predominant varied among individuals and between the two groups.

It was recommended that further guided music listening lessons be offered to elderly people, both for continued study in this area, and for the benefit of the listeners.

The participants reported having enjoyed the classes, and most considered them to have been a learning experience which raised their interest in listening to music.

The purpose of the study was to explore the use, feasibility, and effectiveness of guided music listening lessons as a means of increasing enjoyment of, and knowledge about, music among elderly people.

Twenty-one individuals, with an average age of seventy-three years, participated in the two groups, which met at residences for the elderly in Allentown and Topton, Pennsylvania, respectively. Each group was relatively socio-culturally homogeneous.

While the favorite musical styles of the participants remained stable, classical music gained in relative popularity after the classes, compared to various styles to which the participants reported listening.

The primary method of investigation was action research; therefore, six guided music listening lessons were taught to two groups of elderly people. Information gathered before and after the lessons was compared, adding an element of quasi-experimental research to the study.

Large increases in the listener's knowledge of how classical music is composed were reported and observed. Growth was demonstrated by the ability of many of the participants to maintain or increase reported interest in and appreciation for musical works which became more complex as the lesson series continued.
