An optimal finite-volume large-eddy simulation (LES) model for isotropic turbulence is developed. This modeling approach is based on the approximation of the ideal LES by a stochastic estimate of the fluxes in a finite-volume representation of the Navier-Stokes equation. Stochastic estimation of these fluxes allows for the simultaneous treatment of the Navier-Stokes equations, discretization and subgrid effects, yielding a compact yet accurate scheme for the LES of isotropic turbulence.

Optimal finite-volume LES models are initially developed using velocity correlations computed from direct numerical simulation (DNS) data. These DNS-based models are used to verify the feasibility of the optimal finite-volume models and to guide the choice of stencil geometry and model inputs. The most promising models with smallest a priori variations are tested in actual simulations and the results compared with those for filtered DNS and the dynamic Smagorinsky model. The a posteriori performance of the optimal finite-volume LES models, evaluated by the energy spectrum and third-order structure function, is superior to that of the dynamic Smagorinsky model on a coarse grid.

To remove the dependence of the optimal finite-volume LES models on DNS data, theory- and dynamic-based methods for computing the velocity correlations are formulated. Using both dynamic methods and Kolmogorov theoretical expressions provides closure to the stochastic estimation equations without use of any DNS data. Results with these dynamic optimal finite-volume LES models were once again comparable with the dynamic Smagorinsky results.

Finally, the dynamic optimal finite-volume LES model is applied to more a more complex flow, the temporally-growing shear layer. The results obtained with dynamic optimal finite-volume LES models are comparable with the DNS results of Rogers & Moser (1994), at a fraction of the cost. One expects the results from the shear layer to be representative of the performance of the optimal finitevolume LES models in bulk-flow turbulence.
