Thesis (M.A.)--University of Hawai'i at Manoa, 1990.
Javanese culture is reflected in the wayang (shadow play) stories comprising a blend of various Javanese myths and tales with the Indian epics. This thesis is about a multifaceted, symbolic figure from the wayang kulit called Semar. This mythical figure has a complex place in Javanese culture. However, this thesis will explore Semar's behavior only in the context of wayang kulit. Based on but not limited to the symbolic approaches of Sherry Ortner, Semar is a "summarizing symbol" creating "elaborating symbols."Subjects--Topical Terms:

It is suggested that Semar represents the wisdom by which social equilibrium is achieved among Javanese just as he brings order to the relationships among the characters in the ban. Semar's power lies not in the supernatural but in his adherence to the law of nature and the cosmos. He also symbolizes the human mind and thus bridges nature and culture. Ultimately he is the symbol of the universe.
