The dissertation begins with a return to original sources embodied in the impressions of Tahiti by the French explorer Bougainville and two of his crew, the naturalist Commerson and the Cadet Fesche, set forth in Bougainville's journal, Voyage autour du Monde (1769). In contrast to their visions, Diderot's Tahiti, the Supplement au Voyage de Bougainville, (1772) creates a utopian France where population growth continues unimpeded, greatly benefiting from the generous services of the Tahitian "Venus feconde." Bricaire de la Dixmerie, another enlightenment figure, also uses Tahiti as a vehicle for the criticism of the political and moral abuses of the Ancien Regime.

Victor Segalen's more anthropological and scientific treatment of the myth in Les Immemoriaux, (1907) reveals an attempt to portray the dissolution of Maori culture from within. The Tahitian's are shown repudiating their gods, mythological rituals and ancient "Dires sacres," aided by the zealous practices of the English protestant missionaries, exoticised into another "Other." While Paul Gauguin shares Segalen's passionate interest in culture anthropology, his depiction of the myth of Tahiti in Noa Noa (1901) is an intensely personal one, related to his revolt from the Impressionists and the moral hypocrisies of European society. He shares with Pierre Loti the valuable experience of having lived in Tahiti, and his relationship with Tehura, a young Tahitian woman, is contrasted with Loti's "mariage" to his Tahitian wife, Rarahu, in the latter's Le Mariage de Loti (1878).

The dissertation concludes that the European fascination with the myth of Tahiti represents an "eternal return" to a more mythic, cyclical conception of time through an escape to a "New World" beyond the linear time of history after the Fall. The tragic irony and paradox is that in its quest European culture has in great part destroyed the very Shangri-la to which it has striven to return.
