Alzheimer's dementia is prevalent in elderly individuals aged 65 and older and is the most common form of the progressive, irreversible dementias. Since this disease is irreversible most treatments have focused on acetylcholinesterase inhibitors to slow cognitive delays as well as supportive therapy for the patient, caregiver/s, and family members. Cognitive rehabilitation programs are few for Alzheimer's patients, but more common for traumatic brain injured individuals. It has been shown that TBI patients and early dementia patients have some similar deficits such as, short term memory impairments, poor executive functioning, poor prospective memory and impairments in their activities of daily living skills. Since the few cognitive rehabilitation programs used with Alzheimer's patients have shown to be clinically significant then more are needed. The goal of this program design is to incorporate techniques used with traumatic brain injured patients and early Alzheimer's dementia patients into a comprehensive program for early dementia patients and their families, thus improving quality of life, delaying their cognitive deficits, and improving their psychological well being.
