520 $a Zhang Xinxin (1953-) is marked as a representative of the "modernist school" by both the Chinese critics and Western scholars. This study examines Zhang's narrative structure. However, the study focuses on defining the significance of gender identity in her works, and the heroines, especially the double image of the masculinity/femininity, she created in her fiction.
520 $a The double image of the masculinity/femininity first appeared in Zhang's fiction in 1980. Through creating such an image, Zhang questions the definition of femininity and expresses a woman writer's effort to cross the gender boundary. But, as the cultural confinement by gender has been constructed for us, women who look for a possibility to transcend gender roles may find no way out of the established social contexts of love and marriage. Therefore, in Zhang's perception, gender division can be transcended in shared spirit and understanding between male and female, but not in the social context of romantic bonding. Perhaps this is the reason for all her heroines to be doomed to an emotionally barren life.
520 $a This study begins with a brief account of Zhang's life and education, and attempts to draw a holistic picture of her writings. The argument focuses on demonstrating Zhang as a writer who is searching for her own voice. Chapter two discusses the double image Zhang created in her stories, which reveals her effort to treat the traditional theme of love in a new broad context of transcending gender identity. The specific works discussed in the last two chapters were selected for representing Zhang's continuing effort to seek to overcome the gender confinement imposed by patriarchal culture. These works also provide some insights into contemporary Chinese lives and the sense of what being a woman means in a society which proclaims to regard women as the upholders of half the sky.
