By way of conclusion, it is suggested that "cultural regimes" should prove to be an invaluable conceptual framework for cross-cultural studies of the kind conducted in the present inquiry.

Focusing on two proto-theoretical concepts by which the poetic traditions of China and the West are informed, this dissertation attempts to construct a model for the comparative study of literature across cultural boundaries. Specifically, the inquiry consists of three interrelated areas: lyrical poetry, cultural theory, and cross-cultural methodology.

In cross-cultural studies, a methodology addressing the inevitable "otherness" of the cultural traditions involved is necessary. Such a methodology can be formulated in terms of "local theories," a concept derived from Borges as well as Boas and Geertz.

The validity of "local theories" for cross-cultural studies is demonstrated by means of "poiesis" (creation) and "xiang" (ideography), which have served as the proto-poetics governing the production of lyrical poetry in the West and in China. They are also proto-theoretical, preconditioning mechanisms, because they are deeply rooted in the ancient cultural practices of the bronze age, a time when artifacts and literature began to emerge.

After tracing the evolution of poiesis (from the description of Achilles' shield in the Iliad) and xiang (from Zuo zhuan's account of the caldrons of King Yu), the dissertation goes on to provide a culture-specific reading of diverse texts selected from China (boudoir plaint poetry; Tao Qian) and the West (lyrics of the troubadours; Catullus). In the process, the reading not only testifies to the pervasive and dynamic nature of the two local theories, but also reveals the power and the value of lyrical poetry as a social and personal discourse.

The lyrics studied in the light of poiesis and xiang suggest that, since lyrical poetry is a mode of writing culture, the two local theories are in fact involved in the multifarious design of their cultural traditions. Furthermore, such a cultural function also implies that poiesis and xiang are the protagonists of their "cultural regimes," which in turn can be understood both as a cultural system and as a regime of signs.
