The Ming-Qing transition in the middle of the seventeenth century meant an end to the world of the Han Chinese. The repercussions of the event were immediately apparent in every aspect of society. Lu Xiong's Nuxian Waishi was a novel that reflects the reaction of the literati class most eloquently. This dissertation seeks to examine Nuxian Waishi from the angle of an "intellectuals' novel" and, in the process, to demonstrate how the selection of the topic, the ideology, the structure and style of the novel, as well as the commentaries of the author's friends, reflect the collective consciousness of the intellectuals of the period.

The Jingnan war was an early Ming conflict fought between Emperor Jianwen and his usurping uncle. It ended in a victory for the uncle who then became Emperor Yongle. Tang Sai'er was a mystical religious leader with supernatural powers who led one of the larger rebellions against the Ming government. Her rebellion was eventually subdued by Emperor Yongle, but her legend remained vivid in the minds of the people. Despite the fact that there is no evidence linking the Tang Sai'er rebellion with the cause of the deposed Emperor Jianwen, Lu Xiong not only presents her as a Jianwen loyalist but also sees in her the incarnation of the Moon Goddess, the epitome of virtue.

Lu Xiong was the son of a Ming loyalist. Although he made his living as a secretary for the high-ranking Qing officials, he refused to participate in the civil service examination. For him, the issue of loyalty was of supreme importance. He could not, however, loyal to the Qing because it was a government of the non-Chinese. For this reason he had to create an ideal government of his own. Nuxian Waishi was a blueprint for his utopian kingdom.

Lu Xong succeeded in gathering the support of intellectuals, Qing officials and Ming loyalists alike, because his novel appealed to the literati class as a whole, regardless of their individual political differences and traditional scorn for fiction. This dissertation also seeks the explanation for this rare phenomenon in the history of Chinese fiction.
