It is believed that high-quality choral balance and blend result from a properly combined group of individuals singing freely and naturally with good vocal technique under the strategic placement of voices. Forty-eight singers sang four musical excerpts, with the combination of two musical textures (homophonic and polyphonic compositions) and two types of languages (native and foreign) a cappella in three formations (sectional block, mixed quartet, and hybrid). Five experienced judges evaluated screened live performances by rating choral balance and choral blend on 7-point scales and writing comments. The choristers' perceptions and preferences for the three seating arrangements were collected simultaneously.

The results showed that language familiarity had a powerful effect on choral balance and blend. Choristers had better blend and balance in their native language (Taiwanese). Formation and musical texture did not have a significant effect, but there was a significant interaction on choral blend ratings. Quartet formation served choral blend better for homophonic compositions and hybrid formation functioned better for polyphonic compositions, while sectional formation functioned well for both textures. The choristers preferred sectional formation and disliked quartet formation most, regardless of texture. Vocal or instrumental study was the strongest influence on choristers' preferences for formations; those with more musical study had a greater preference for mixed formations. Choral ability also had positive effects on the preference for homophonic compositions. As to choristers' perceptions, they believed that their singing independence increased most in quartet formation. But they felt more confident during ensemble, and that they got more support from the same voice part, sang more in tune, and tended to sing louder in sectional formation. The findings suggest that a diversity of formations be applied when dealing with various textures and styles of choral literature, and positioning singers in a mixed formation is a useful strategy to increase singers' independence and musical growth.
