Metal pollution, in combination with other stressors such as acidification and climate change, can disrupt ecosystem balance. Factors affecting metal dynamics in the environment were studied by measuring concentrations of Al, As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Li, Mn, Ni, Pb, Rh, Sr. Tl, U, V and Zn in compartments of a small, acid-sensitive forested catchment on the Precambrian Shield over a three year period.

Some metals (As, Cd, Pb and Zn) were enriched in bulk deposition, the forest floor and upper lake sediment. Concentrations of most metals were positively related to DOC and/or acidity, although relationships vary as water passes through the catchment. Seasonal differences in metal, DOC, SO 4 and SiO3 concentrations were observed, and metals exhibited temporal coherence in the streams. Mass balance calculations show that for most metals, the mineral soil and lake sediments were sinks while the wetland exported metals during this drought year.
