Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2008.
The 2005 reports from the Center for Disease Control reveal that thirty-five percent of children from lower socioeconomic communities remain at risk to the physical and mental dangers of the environmental toxin, lead. Children living in high-risk communities face danger of lead exposure in their home, school, and community environment. The research problem to be addressed was which educational format, written or video, can increase parental compliance measured by bringing the child for a lead screening within four weeks after exposure to the information. The measurable variables used to determine this were the number of parents who take their child for screening within two weeks, and the format of the presentation (written or video). This research provided significant information for the Northeast Florida Lead Prevention Programs regarding which educational format was more effective in presenting information about the importance of having children screened for potential lead poisoning and measuring the level of parental compliance. Results showed no differences between the two groups; however, other findings important to this problem shed light on the reasons for the problem of parental compliance.
