This study of social work internships was conducted using grounded theory methodology (Glaser & Strauss, 1967; Glaser, 1978, 1992, 1998). Data included open-ended interviews with students, the students' field notes, and comprehensive reports about their internship experiences. The theory of "relationship searching" emerged through the process of constant comparative analysis and theoretical sampling (Glaser, 1965).

When students enter social work internship sites, they become confused and overwhelmed, which is conceptualized as "feeling lost." Relationship searching is the strategy students use to resolve feeling lost. Relationship searching includes four stages: positioning, attending, connecting, and reflecting. The first stage, positioning, includes three substages: observing, informant searching, and becoming a member. The second stage, attending, includes two dimensions: minding manners and what students refer to as mimamori (keeping an eye on someone). The third stage, connecting, conceptualizes four substages: koekake (talking to someone), imitating, being connected, and becoming a hub. The final stage, reflecting, conceptualizes three subproperties: reinforcer, reading records, and writing reports. The result of successful relationship searching is that the social work students feel a sense of accomplishment.

A grounded action (Simmons & Gregory, 2003) based on the grounded theory of relationship searching was developed. The grounded action of relationship searching includes three categories: positioning search, attending techniques, and connecting techniques. Based on these categories, guidelines for social work internships were introduced. Internship students can use these guidelines to monitor their behaviors and feelings to become more comfortable in unusual and unfamiliar situations.
