It is the purpose of this study to examine the interrelated concepts of politics, economics, and culture in their connection to the death care industry in black America. Specifically, it is the intent of this study to illuminate the often over-looked work and commitment of African-American funeral directors who served the funeral needs of their communities and as an advocate for their social and political needs as well. The first part of the study examines the historical development of African-American undertakers in the funeral service industry and politics. Current African-American business history fails to capture appropriately the similar stories and themes of Negro undertakers who went into the funeral service between the end of slavery and the beginning of the direct action protest phase of the civil rights movement. Through an analysis of papers, newspapers and oral interviews, this study provides a larger understanding of the role of African-American funeral directors in black business history. Part II of the study examines three funeral home families who have demonstrated considerable influence in their respective communities. Through an analysis of the Leevy Family of Columbia, South Carolina, the Diggs Family of Detroit, Michigan, and the Ford Family of Memphis, Tennessee, this study will also examine the continuity of political activity by African-American funeral directors in the twentieth century.

Furthermore, it is the intent of this study to examine a question raised by Michael Plater in his study, African-American Entrepreneurship in Richmond, 1890--1940, The Story of R. C. Scott. The author's thesis is that African-American funeral directors were major power brokers in the black community during the early twentieth century. Writing in 1996, Plater raised the query: Are funeral directors still major power brokers in the African-American community? The answer to that question may reside in degrees of influence and is relative to time, place and circumstance. Even though the historical role of the African-American funeral director has evolved as a result of integration, economic parity, and political opportunity, it is my contention that African-American funeral directors, in some communities, remained power brokers in business, politics, and philanthropy throughout the twentieth century.
