'High-risk' pregnancy and perinatal loss are stressful events in the lives of women, yet no research has been published specifically in relationship to 'high-risk' pregnancy following perinatal loss. Therefore, women's experience of 'high-risk' pregnancy following perinatal loss is poorly understood. The need to have knowledgeable and supportive healthcare providers has been expressed by women experiencing pregnancy subsequent to perinatal loss and women experiencing 'high-risk' pregnancy.

This study explored seven women's experience of 'high-risk' pregnancy following perinatal loss using a feminist phenomenological methodology. Conversational interviews and reflective journaling were conducted to understand the women's lived experiences. Thematic analysis of the interview data and researcher interpretation revealed four themes: understanding the meaning in the 'high-risk' pregnancy label, relational engagement with the unborn baby, insight and acceptance of the influence of previous loss, and essentiality of information. These themes provide insight into the women's experience of 'high-risk' pregnancy following perinatal loss. An increased understanding of this phenomenon may provoke nurses and other healthcare providers' consideration regarding how to support and provide care to women experiencing 'high-risk' pregnancy following perinatal loss. Future studies are warranted to further our understanding of 'high-risk' pregnancy following perinatal loss.
