Thesis (M.S.P.H.)--The Texas A&M University System Health Science Center, 2007.
As obesity rates continue to rise, it is critical to outline contributing factors to better treat and prevent the occurrence of this disease. Previous research has found a link between excessive weight retention post-partum to elevated risk of obesity fifteen years later, yet have been unable to determine a cause for excessive weight retention. As such, the objective of this study is to determine if a relationship does in fact exist between pregnancy weight gain and post-partum weight retention. We found that for each kilogram of increase weight gain during pregnancy increased the likelihood of retaining 3.86-9.84 kg by 2% and 9.84-85.96 kg by 3%, reduced the risk of losing weight in excess of that gained during her pregnancy by 2%. Furthermore, analysis of the "part vs. whole" bias theory is also presented while addressing factors contributing to the weight retention variable.
