We present a classical interpretation of phenomena that have been attributed to macroscopic quantum tunneling. In this study, we apply classical analytical and numerical techniques to microwave-driven Josephson junction systems. The phenomena considered are referred to in published experiments as multi-peaked switching distributions, Rabi oscillations, Ramsey fringes, and spin-echo oscillations. In short, we find that a transient, modulating response of the system to microwave signals determines the oscillatory nature of the switching response.Subjects--Topical Terms:
